The SIE exam has 80 questions (75 scored + 5 unscored), a 105-minute limit, a passing score of 70, and a $100 fee. Full format and section weights inside.
Quick answer: The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam is an entry-level FINRA qualification exam. It has 80 multiple-choice questions (75 scored, 5 unscored), a 1-hour-45-minute time limit, and a passing score of 70. It costs $100, requires no employer sponsorship, and results stay valid for four years.
This guide explains how the SIE exam works: question format, timing, scoring, the four subject areas, and how to prepare.
What is the SIE exam?
The Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam is an entry-level qualification exam administered by FINRA (the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority). It tests foundational knowledge of the securities industry, including market structure, investment products, trading, customer accounts, and the rules and regulations that govern the business.
Two features distinguish the SIE from other FINRA exams:
- No sponsorship is required. A candidate does not need to be employed by a FINRA member firm to take the SIE. Anyone aged 18 or older can enroll directly with FINRA.
- The SIE alone does not qualify you for registration. To become a registered representative, a candidate must also pass a “top-off” exam (such as the Series 6 or Series 7) and associate with a member firm. The two exams can be taken in either order. A passing SIE result remains valid for four years.
How many questions are on the SIE exam?
The SIE exam has 80 total multiple-choice questions:
- 75 questions are scored and count toward the pass/fail result.
- 5 questions are unscored pretest questions. They are scattered randomly throughout the exam and are unmarked. FINRA uses them to evaluate questions for future exams. Candidates cannot tell which questions are scored.
Every question has four answer choices (A–D). There is no penalty for guessing, so candidates should answer every question.
2025 update: Effective October 27, 2025, FINRA reduced the number of unscored pretest questions from 10 to 5, lowering the total from 85 questions to 80. The number of scored questions (75), the passing score (70), and the time limit (105 minutes) did not change.
How long is the SIE exam?
The SIE exam has a time limit of 1 hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes). This works out to roughly 1.4 minutes per question, which FINRA considers sufficient for all candidates to finish.
What is the passing score for the SIE exam?
The passing score for the SIE exam is 70, on a scale of 0 to 100. This is approximately 70% of the 75 scored questions, or about 53 correct answers.
Key scoring facts:
- The score is scaled (equated). FINRA statistically adjusts for slight difficulty differences between exam versions.
- The exam is criterion-referenced, not curved. Candidates are measured against a fixed standard, not against other test-takers.
- There is no penalty for guessing. Unscored questions do not affect the score.
- Results are immediate. Candidates receive a pass/fail result upon completing the exam.
How much does the SIE exam cost?
The SIE exam costs $100. The fee is non-refundable and is paid to FINRA at enrollment. If a candidate fails, each retake costs an additional $100.
Where is the SIE exam taken?
The SIE exam can be taken at a Prometric test center or online, depending on availability and the candidate’s choice. No reference materials are permitted during the exam.
What subjects are on the SIE exam?
The SIE exam is divided into four content areas. The weighting of each section determines how much of the exam it represents:
Section 1: Knowledge of Capital Markets — 16% Covers market structure (primary, secondary, third, and fourth markets), economic factors, securities offerings, and regulatory agencies including the SEC, FINRA, MSRB, and SIPC.
Section 2: Understanding Products and Their Risks — 44% The largest section. Covers equity securities, debt securities, packaged products (mutual funds, ETFs, annuities), options and other derivatives, and the risks associated with each product type.
Section 3: Understanding Trading, Customer Accounts, and Prohibited Activities — 31% Covers order types, trade settlement, account types, and prohibited practices such as churning, front-running, and insider trading.
Section 4: Overview of the Regulatory Framework — 9% Covers self-regulatory organizations (SROs), registration and continuing education requirements, and the roles of key regulatory bodies.
Study priority: Sections 2 and 3 together account for 75% of the exam. Most study time should focus there, but the smaller sections still affect the final score.
What is the SIE exam retake policy?
Under FINRA’s updated Rule 1210 (2026), if a candidate fails the SIE exam the following waiting periods apply:
- After the 1st failed attempt: 15 calendar days
- After the 2nd failed attempt: 15 calendar days
- After the 3rd or later consecutive failed attempt within a two-year period: 60 calendar days
This replaced the former 30-day and 180-day waits. Because the change is recent, confirm the current window with FINRA when you schedule your retake. Each retake requires a new enrollment and the $100 fee, and there is no limit on attempts.
What are the most common SIE exam preparation mistakes?
- Underpreparing the regulatory and trading content. A candidate who scores well on Products but poorly on the regulatory and trading sections can still fail. Every section counts toward the scaled score.
- Studying with Series 7 materials. The SIE tests what products exist and how they generally work. It does not test deep suitability analysis or complex options strategies, which are Series 7 topics. Series 7 materials add untested detail.
- Not doing enough practice questions. FINRA’s question style tests distinctions between similar concepts. Practice volume builds familiarity with the format.
How long should you study for the SIE exam?
Most candidates who pass on the first attempt study for 30 to 50 hours. The difficulty of the SIE comes from breadth, not depth — candidates need to know a little about many topics, and the hardest part is learning the financial services vocabulary.
An effective preparation plan:
- Use the official FINRA content outline as the study roadmap.
- Study in short, focused sessions.
- Start timed practice exams early to build pacing.
- Consistently scoring 75% or higher on full-length practice tests indicates readiness.
